A year after earthquake, people of Doda-Kishtwar belt continue to suffer | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 8: More than a year has passed since a moderate earthquake hit the Doda-Kishtwar belt on May 1 last year causing severe damage to the property in three districts, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar. Since then the people continue to suffer. As the 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the people of Doda-Kishtwar belt , which forced them to stay in open for around three months, huge snowfall followed by torrential rains till last week made their life more difficult. More and more people are suffering and those whose houses got damaged in the earthquake were the worst sufferers. They first were thrown out of their homes by the nature and were left to face the brutal attitude of both state and central governments. They were handed over the relief of Rs 6300 for fully damaged houses, Rs 3200 for severely damaged houses and Rs 1800 for partially damaged houses. Not a single penny was brought for them on the name of compensation by anybody. Local politicians, irrespective of affiliation of parties, were keeping mum and they were only busy in trying to benefit their near and dear ones. "It is the common man of the area which has suffered. Sarpanches and Panches forwarded the requests of their close aids and got both tents as well as relief and many people are still suffering," said Satish Kumar, a person whose house got severely damaged in the earthquake. Even the visit of Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh during June last year could bring any sort of compensation for them and people were left high and dry by the government. Now, when things were coming back to normal, unprecedented rainfall damaged many houses and almost each and every road in the area and government is not taking any cognizance. |
