Ahead of LA polls, incorrect Voter-ID cards mock at people | | | Muhammad Mukaram
SRINAGAR, July 6: With assembly elections just few months away, misspelled names and incorrect birth dates on fresh Voter-ID cards across Kashmir are leaving thousands in distress. More particularly when the Voter-ID card is not just a proof of being a voter but also the evidence that you are a genuine citizen. Despite repeated complaints lodged by the affected people at the Booth Level Officer (BLO), nothing has been done to undo the wrongs and same very cards that carry incorrect particulars of the card holder were being issued. Umer Khalid, a struggling businessman from Pulwama lost the opportunity to take showroom on rent in Delhi after mismatching in his name on the Voter-ID card and other documents such as pan card, state subject or passport. "Due to the errors in my Voter ID card, I couldn't register my business unit in Delhi last year. I approached the concerned BLO many times to correct the mistakes but every time my card was returned with more inaccuracies, like miss-spelled name, wrong date of birth. Because of this I lost the opportunity to take a showroom on rent and start my business," said Umer. There are different agencies which provide identity cards to people in Kashmir but the Voter Identity card (Voter ID) is considered to be the most trustworthy by the security agencies as also the officials of various government agencies and departments, especially outside Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore any mistake or error made in the particulars of the card holder creates lot of problems for the latter and at times his very credentials are doubted. "My actual name is Dilnawaz Muntazir but on Voter-ID card officials have typed Dil-Nawaz Muhi Deen. This is the height of things. In some countries misspelling a name in an official document is liable to fine but here our officials can get away with any volume of errors," rues Dilnawaz, a doctor and a budding filmmaker. "This is the second time when I am getting a Voter ID which is full of errors. On my Voter card my name has been put as Ashfaq Ahmad but my name is Ishfaq Abdullah Wani and my date of birth also mismatches," said Ishfaq Abdullah Wani, a resident of Gopalpora Anantnag. Many card holders, especially youth, fear that the card reading information may sometimes land them in jail. "During elections I had to ferry my ailing wife to hospital. I showed my voter ID to a policeman manning a checkpoint. When he matched my ID with the papers of my car he detained me for half an hour," said another card holder. It is learnt that the election office in Srinagar is having poor liaison with its booth level offices located across Kashmir valley. "We receive the primary data in Urdu and then we have to translate the same in English through different software's, sometimes these errors occur in translations process. Also the applicants sometimes don't provide the proper information to the officials," said an official of Chief Electoral Office. "It will be very difficult to rectify the errors at a time when the assembly elections are round the corner," said the official. Citizens have also complained of wrong information on the cards. "Most of these cards carry wrong addresses. We approach BLOs but there the complaint is not acknowledged," said a card holder who bears incorrect address on his card. |
