Omar raising NHPC bogey to hide his failures | | | Fazal Khan
SRINAGAR, Aug 27: A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that no more power projects would be allotted to NHPC till the company agrees to work in joint venture with the state government, experts and politicians mocked at his claims, saying, "He (Omar) is promising something which he won't be able to do as his tenure is coming to an end." Talking to Early Times the PDP spokesman Naeem Akther said, "Omar has admitted failure as he couldn't deliver when he was given the mandate by the people. Now he knows that road has ended for him and he is making such announcements which he won't be able to accomplish." Akther said, "Omar has realized that his party won't be able to form the next government that's why he is giving such statements." A prominent civil society activist Shakeel Qalandar said, "Since the day NC led government has taken over the reins of the state it has been taking people for a ride by raking up the issue of taking back the power projects from the NHPC." He said, "Till date government has not done anything to take back the power projects. The control of these projects lies with the state government as NHPC as no legal authority to run these projects." Qalandar said that Omar is raising the bogey of awarding no more power projects to NHPC to divert the attention from the real issues. "Power tariff has increased by more than 400 percent in the past five years and people of JK are being made to pay through their nose," he added. An expert said that NHPC enjoys centre's support and "Omar cannot take cajoles with the central government," he said. "Omar's tenure has been disappointing as he turned out to be a very weak Chief Minister." A politician, who wished not to be named, said, "Omar is raising issues like Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and NHPC to strike a chord with people. He has realized that he cannot promise Bijli, Sadak and Pani to people as he has failed to keep up the promises he had made in his election manifesto in 2008. Biljli has become the most expensive commodity, while roads are in shambles and water resources have dried up." The politician said, "NC during its five and a half year rule dumped the important issues which touch common man's skin. As the elections are approaching the NC leaders, including the Chief Minister, have realized that their report card is zero." An expert said that Chenab Valley Power Corporation (CVPC) is a joint venture of the NHPC and the state government. "Omar before raising the bogey of not granting new projects to NHPC needs to come clear on what is the status of the CVPC," the expert asked. |
