"Peep into past and see who tried to buy media?' | Omar's memory short lived! | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the end of his tenure has trained guns at the local media houses in Jammu and Kashmir. His recent statement that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has purchased the local newspapers to run a "propaganda campaign" against him and his government is shocking! It seems the Chief Minister believes that media houses are a "saleable commodity" which anybody can purchase. It looks like Chief Minister' memory is short lived. Early Times peeped into past to remind him how his close aide and his right hand man ensured that no newspaper in Jammu and Kashmir carries the news story about cable operators making a self immolation bid to protest against his dictatorial approach. On February 26, 2013 Policemen deployed at Press Enclave Srinagar were surprised when a few cable operators tried to set themselves on fire after spraying petrol and kerosene on their bodies. However, police foiled their bid and arrested them on spot. Dozens of cable operators had assembled at Press Enclave here to protest against the decision of District Administration Srinagar to seal their offices without any reason. Protestors were carrying placards and banners. Raising slogans against the Jammu Provincial president of National Conference, Devender Singh Rana, operators associated with SEN had alleged that district administration Srinagar had sealed their office under political pressure. "We have proper documents and are authorized to run channels but on the behest of Rana, who owns Take One TV Network, DC Srinagar has sealed our offices," the cable operators had alleged. If the Chief Minister goes through the local newspapers of that day, he would find that none of the media organizations had carried the news story against his powerful right hand man. Today he is raising hue and cry that media houses have been purchased and these are running "propaganda" against him. Why didn't he rake up the issue just one and a half year before when media houses blacked out a news story which was against his aide and was of great importance for the people. One needs to ask Omar how come his close aide managed to get the news story killed. Did he use money power or muscle power? |
