Members of Election Committee select themselves for party mandate | Queer ways of Congress | | Kunal Shrivatsa Jammu, Aug 27: Though the Election Committee of Pradesh Congress has sent the panels of short listed candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls in the state to the Screening Committee, the 'bizarre' methodology to finalize the same has created a furore in the party circles. According to party insiders, a section in the Congress is disenchanted over the selection of candidates for the panels by none other than those seeking mandate from the party. Sources informed Early Times that a large number of Congress workers and their leaders representing different Assembly constituencies are baffled that some of the representatives in the Congress Election Committee are themselves aspirants and their presence in the meeting held yesterday at Srinagar should have been avoided. Sources further said that the likes of Gulchain Singh Charak, Arvinder Singh Micky, Indu Pawar, Shahnawaz Choudhary (representing Pradesh Youth Congress) and some others on one hand were part of the Election Committee while on the other they are also vying for the party mandate. While Gulchain Singh Charak's name was included in the panel for Bishnah Assembly seat along with Shashi Sharma, the shortlisted probable candidates for the Jammu West Assembly constituency are Arvinder Singh Micky and four others including Satish Sharma, Manmohan Singh, Surinder Singh Shingari and Vinod Sharma. For Marh constituency, names of Indu Pawar and Balwan Singh were finalized for the panel whereas Shahnawaz Choudhary, president of Pradesh Youth Congress, was also included in the panel from Surankote Assembly constituency alongwith Mohammad Akram, son of late Congress leader Choudhary Mohammad Aslam. "The party has set a wrong precedence of allowing those who were themselves in the race of tickets to attend the meeting… The party is certainly on the wrong side of the fence… It should not have adopted such a method to finalize the panels of candidates for different assembly constituencies," said sources. "It is nothing but making a mockery of the selection process… How a fair choice for the probable candidates could be made when decision makers are themselves hoping to get the party mandate… How one can oppose or object to the candidature of a particular leader in front of him or her when he or she is part of the Committee," they added. Sources said that the grass root level workers as well as leaders are annoyed that why the party deviated from the usual practice of consulting its block and district level committees in finalizing the aspirants. "Earlier the Block Congress Committees used to select 5-6 names for a particular constituency and after hectic deliberations 2 to 3 names were forwarded for recommendations to District Congress Committees but sadly the Blocks as well as District level Committees of the party are almost defunct for quite some time now…. The panels thus made cannot be justified as they have not been made in consultation with the grass root level workers," said sources. It is pertinent to mention here that the panels of short listed candidates will be sent to the Screening Committee, which will forward the same to Central Parliamentary Board for final approval and mandate to the Congress candidate for each Assembly seat. |
