Omar's Kashmir centric agenda: While granting amnesty to stone pelters of Kashmir, he forgot Jammu, Kishtwar | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 27: Omar Abdullah's politics has from the very beginning been revolving around Kashmir only. In the latest case, his government announced amnesty for the stone pelters of Kashmir but while doing so, he forgot that he is the Chief Minister of Jammu too and in this region also, there are many youth who were booked by police in the incidents of stone throwing during the Amarnath land row. But he and his Jammu-based party colleagues have never uttered even a single word to also grant such amnesty to the youth of Jammu region, including those who were booked in such cases during the recent Kishtwar communal clashes. The general feeling is that amnesty for the Kashmir's stone throwers has been announced by the Omar-led government with an eye on the upcoming Assembly polls in the state but the move is very late as there has already been a lot of resentment against him in this regard across the Valley. NC may be able to draw some political mileage out of this issue in Kashmir but it won't get any such benefit in Jammu where this feeling has started taking roots in the minds of the people that he is not their Chief Minister. Had he also been their Chief Minister, he would have been prompt to announce amnesty for the stone throwers of Jammu and Kishtwar, feel Jammuites. People feel that there is no leader in Jammu who can raise this issue and simultaneously take it up with the government. Even BJP, which has its base in Jammu, has failed on this front, they maintained. NC leader and Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar had on Tuesday announced in the Assembly that a decision had been taken on granting amnesty to the youth and a formal announcement in this regard would be made by the Chief Minister soon. He said it would 'not be wrong to say' that 2010 unrest was the offshoot of 2008 Amarnath land row. The government had also announced on February 11 last that 1811 youth were granted amnesty in stone-pelting cases registered in 2010-11 in the state. Amnesty had been granted to 1811 youths involved in 230 cases of stone-pelting during 2010 and 2011, it had told the Legislative Assembly. |
