Congress, NC working in tandem in Jammu province | Political dishonesty | | Neha
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 16: Those who are saying that the NC and the Congress are fighting the assembly elections to defeat each other are wrong. The truth is that the coalition partners are working in tandem in certain constituencies in Jammu province to ensure the victory of their candidates and defeat of the BJP and the PDP candidates. They are saying so but are helping each other, particularly in the constituencies where the number of Muslim voters is slightly more as compared with the non-Muslim voters. JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz has, of course, acknowledged that the Congress has fielded weak candidates in certain constituencies to help the NC and defeat the BJP and the PDP candidates. Take, for example, the Kishtwar assembly constituency. The Congress has fielded Nek Ram against MOS Home Sajad Kitchloo ignoring the claim of Sheikh Ghulam Haider, who had got over 14,000 votes in the 2002 assembly elections. Haider is the state Congress vice-president and has a strong support-base in the Kishtwar constituency. But the Congress preferred Nek Ram, block president of the Congress in Padder. The JKPCC president admitted that the Congress fielded Nek Ram to ensure that the Muslim votes do not get divided between the Congress and the NC. "The party (Congress) decided not to field Sheikh Ghulam Haider as this would have divided Muslim votes in the constituency," Soz was quoted as saying. His statement means two things: The Congress' whole approach is communal and divisive and it is fielding candidates in certain constituencies not win the election but to help the NC, a party that he had been criticizing for months. It's political dishonesty or act of political debauchery. It is for Nek Ram to think about what the Congress did to him. It will be seen if the wounded Haider helps the NC. The NC is also reciprocating the Congress' dishonest political gestures. For instance, the NC has fielded weak candidates in Bhaderwah and Inderwal to see to it that the Congress candidates Sharief Niaz and Ghulam Mohammad Saroori win the election. Both the Congress candidates are not considered strong in their respective constituencies and if the votes of a particular community get divided, the BJP would win the election. No one can question the electoral strategy adopted by any political party, but the manner in which the JKPCC explained away the reasons behind fielding weak candidates against the NC candidates in certain constituencies does suggest that the Congress, like the NC, is hoodwinking and misleading the people by criticizing each other. Such questionable means would not help any of the coalition partners. Instead, these are likely to prove counter-productive. |
