'Influentials' encroach thousands kanals of state land in Bijbehara village
Revenue department fails to implement High Court directions

ANANTNAG, Mar 11: Barely four days after the High Court directed revenue authorities to retrieve encroached state land in the state, a group of influential people in Mehand village of Bijbehara area in South Kashmir's Anantnag district has encroached thousands of kanals of state land.
Locals informed Early Times that a group of people having connection with top officials in the administration encroached the state land adjacent to Nowshera village by demarcating the same among themselves.
"Yesterday in the morning at around 11:00 AM a group of people came here and started demarcating the open pastures which is purely state land and distributed it," said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident. He said the land grabbers have planted trees and are planning to fence it by the wire.
Locals claimed that they informed the concerned department at the time when the land grabbers were encroaching the land by planting the trees, however no action was taken.
"We informed the concerned Naib Tehsildar about the land encroachment, but he didn't take action, the locals said. The locals accused the revenue authorities of having nexus with the land grabbers.It would be in place to mention here that thousands of kanals of state land is lying on both sides of Khiram-Srigufwara road from Hitigam Bridge to Mehand Bridge. According to locals maximum portion of the state land is under the occupation of social forestry department. They said that Irrigation and Flood control department has also constructed a rest house on the land in the same area. A middle rung official of the Revenue department told Early Times that it wasn't the first time that land grabbers have encroached the state land but the said land is being encroached by the land grabbers from past over years. Assistant Commissioner Revenue Anantnag, when contacted assured action. "Yes I am aware of the situation and I will gear up my subordinates for retrieving the encroached land".
The High Court had few days go directed Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Rohit Kansal to retrieve the encroached state land and ensure removal of the encroachments from same.
