A fortnight later, two Ministers fail to assume offices | People question reluctant Ministers intent? | | Peerzada Ummer ET Report srinagar, Mar 11: Reluctance on part of a couple of ministers of the newly constituted Mufti government, on flimsy grounds is being seen as inception of an unhealthy trend for democracy. These ministers who have stayed away from their offices have argued that their supporters were unhappy with 'inferior' portfolios allocated to them as if they were ministers of only their supporters and followers and not of the entire state. "How could your supporters dictate you which ministry to accept and which not to. Isn't it a fact that a minister belongs to the state and not to his constituency," is what continues to remain a talk of the town in Jammu and Kashmir at present. People across the state besides being disgruntled over the fact that ministries are being accepted on the directions of the party workers also observe that the state would tread towards the most risky road in its history if the trend is halted at an earliest. "You can be an MLA for your supporters. You are free to serve them in that capacity but you cannot pick your ministry while keeping in view the needs of your area. If you are a minister, you belong to the state and there must be no partiality in your approach," says Khalid Sayeed a local columnist. What shook people across the state was the statement coming out from the desk of the PDP leader Imran Ansari who had earlier expressed displeasure terming the portfolio accorded to him as "humiliating treatment" during the government formation. Imran got Information Technology (IT), Technical Education and Sports and Youth Services. "My workers are not happy with my portfolio. Our community came out to support PDP in all its strength only because they felt completely ignored by the previous governments and saw a ray of hope in this new dispensation. Imran added that he is in politics because he has to look after the interests of people who have been completely ignored till now. '"My community is upset. They believe that I deserve more than what has been given to me," added the shia cleric. As per the state constitution, a minister to whom functioning of a particular department of Jammu and Kashmir is handed over has to look after it during his tenure. When you choose your ministry as per the wish of the supporters of your area, it means that you want to work for them only as a minister and not for the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, says Amir Rasool, a university student here. It is also being widely discussed in JK that the time has come when the constituency and the ministry has to be linked from each other so that a representative could work as an MLA for his area separately and a minister for the entire state separately. The social media in the state is also abuzz with the discussions that supporters of any MLA cannot dictate a ministry for him as after all he continues to be an MLA for them and minister for his state. It was earlier, PC chairman Sajad Lone who refused to join office due to the portfolio accorded to him. Though Sajad didn't mention his reservations publically, sources said that he has intimated the BJP leadership that till some changes aren't done in his ministry, he will not join the office. |
