BJP conclave endorses coalition with PDP | | | If the National Executive of the BJP endorsed the party's alliance with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir it has done the right thing because the alliance was cobbled simply to provide good governance which could improve "Vikaas" (development) of the state. In fact there was need for such an endorsement because many top leaders in the BJP besides those running he show in the RSS had become apprehensive of the party's decision to share power with the PDP.In fact the BJP had become apprehensive of the PDP when its patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, who heads the coalition Government, credited Pakistan, militants and separatists for their role in ensuring incident free Assembly and Lok Sabha election which also witnessed high polling percentage.Possibly the BJP leaders seem to ignorant of the political compulsions of Mufti Sayeed for trying to keep Pakistan, militants and separatists in good humour. Once these three sector remain in good mood, the Mufti can have less difficulties in running the Government.During the last over two decades the separatists,Islamabad and militants have amply displayed their potential for mischief. These three agencies have been behind all acts of violence and the civilian strife of the magnitude witnessed in Kashmir during the summer months of 2008-09 when about 120 people were killed in clashes with the security forces. Another cause of suspicion over the fallout of the alliance with the PDP was the report that Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, had ordered release of Masarat Alam,a hardliner among the separatists, who had been jailed on charges of having incited people to violence in 2010. But the reality is that Masarat was released under the court order and the Governmet, during the Governor's rule, had signed the release order on February 4. And the Mufti simply saw to it that the court and the Government order were implemented. Whatever may have been the compulsions on the part of the BJP the National Executive committee meet in Begaluru did touch the party's alliance issue with the PDP. Seeking to allay concerns in the party over alliance with PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP's national executive had dwelt at length on the issue, underscoring that "conventional positions" would not have met the developmental aspirations of the people of the state. A special briefing on its partnership with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed-led party, for which BJP put several key issues including Article 370 on the backburner, was made by the party's General Secretary Ram Madhav during the concluding day of the meeting and the decision received "complete endorsement" of the national executive, senior party leader and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said. There has been a sense of unease in the BJP over the alliance, more so after Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed credited Hurriyat, militants and Pakistan for smooth polls in the state and hardcore separatist Masarat Alam was released from jail, inviting strong reaction from the saffron party and the Modi government. " Jaitley rightly explained that the nature of the mandate decided the possible course of the coalition. Secondly, there is a popular feeling within the state also that the governance deficit must go and developmental politics must come. And, thirdly, behind the national agenda of developmental politics it is extremely important that more and more political parties come and endorse the developmental politics which the rest of the country wants in Jammu and Kashmir. During the Assembly election the state registered all time high polling percentage because people wanted to vote for change, change of guard. During the previous NC-Congress coalition Government, which lasted for six years, people had become restive because of governance deficit.Basic problems of people, including unemployment, had found not solution during the last six years and hence they voted for the PDP in the Kashmir valley and for the BJP in the Jammu region. And if the BJP and the PDP cobbled an alliance to share power it could set the stage for resolving regional imbalance. For the first time in its history the BJP got a chance to share power and it did not want to waste this opportunity. For both the PDP and the BJP the decision to share power was a very difficult idea because of the regional divide between the Kashmir centric PDP and the Jammu centric BJP. The two can keep their vote bank intact if they utilize their energy and the internal and external resources for giving a new meaning and shape to the development activities. |
