Partap Singh wanted to connect JK capitals through a 290 km ropeway | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 6: The problems faced by the people of the state by frequent blockade of Srinagar-Jammu highway can b solved if the present day authorities appreciate the wisdom of the Dogra rulers and implement their plans to connect two capitals of the state throughout the year. Maharaja Partap Singh executed an agreement with a British Company Forbes and Forbes in 1912 based in Karachi in undivided India to connect Srinagar and Jammu through a 390 kilometer ropeway. The document reflects the keenness of the Maharaja to get the project completed in just four years. The agreement gave the Company just one year to undertake and complete the survey in Shivalik and Pir Panjal mountain ranges. The Maharaja had also reserved the right to cancel the agreement in case the Company failed to execute the project within the stipulated time. The agreement made it mandatory for the Forbes and Forbes to take care of environment issues. While surveying the forests, the Company was supposed to pay for the cost of trees and wood damaged during the project. As per the MOU, the Maharaja had to pay £100,000 as the state's share for the project while the remaining expenditure had to be borne by the Company. Maharaja also fixed the fare. Three types of travelling categories were proposed: Rs 32 was fixed for first class, Rs 16 for second and Rs 5 for third class. A provision for 25 per cent concession to government officials was also made in the MoU and there was another plan for the Rope-way from Srinagar to Baramulla. However the British rulers sabotaged the project for political reasons. Partap Singh succeeded Ranbir Singh and ruled the state from 1885 to 1925. He conceived the rope way project in 1910 and wanted to gift the dream project to the people of the state. |
