Landslides & Safety Precautions
4/6/2015 11:34:23 PM
Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Yetoo

Landslides occur
each year in Jammu
and Kashmir including other parts of the world.Recently we suffered a heavy human loss in Budgam and other districts of our state.Other losses can be compensated but human losses are irreparable and ultimate care needs to be taken. Govt shall take serious measures to educate the masses and utilize the services of occupational safety experts so that further losses are minimized. While understanding a Land slide,we can understand that it is a downward movement of soil, which may be slow or sudden, occur naturally or be caused by man. It generally carries a small soil mass with it and occurs more frequently with clay soil.
Prevention tips and safety rules
Your municipality should be contacted to find out about the local geology and the history of landslides in your area. Consultation of maps that indicate hazard-prone areas should be ensured.
Avoid doing work on your lot that could increase soil instability, for example:
n digging a hole on a slope;
nbuilding at the top or the base of a slope;
n draining a pool by emptying the water on a steep slope.
Report any abnormalities to the municipal authorities:
ncracks on your lot;
nbulge on a slope;
n rockslide;
nunusual seepage of water.
Action in the event of a landslide
To prevent hazards and injury in the event of a landslide:
If you are indoors:
n take refuge in the part of the building opposite the landslide;
n take shelter under a solid piece of furniture;
n hold firmly onto an object that is solidly anchored until all movement has stopped.
If you are outdoors:
n quickly move away from the probable path of the landslide;
n stay far away from river banks, trees, electrical wires and utility poles;
n do not approach the landslide area, as it often remains unstable.
Evacuate your home
If the authorities require it or you believe your safety is in jeopardy, you should evacuate your home. Inform your family or the municipality of the place where you plan to stay temporarily.
Return to your home when authorized to do so
If the authorities allow it and your safety is not jeopardized, you must return to your home, preferably during the day, when problems and hazards are easier to see. When you arrive, take pictures to document the damage to your home.
