Hectic lobbying begins for Chairman LC | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 10: As the elections to the chairman and deputy chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council have been scheduled on April12, hectic lobbying for the posts has begun with Inayat Ali, Zafar Iqbal Manhas Khursheed Aalam and Saifuddin Bhat emerging as the front runners for Chairmanship of the council. Sources in PDP said that though senior and influential ministers is supporting Inayat Ali of Kargil for the post, other senior ministers are strongly opposed to the idea. Sources said some senior cabinet ministers in PDP are not in favour of Inayat. They, according to the sources, have a convincing argument that Inayat is undereducated and does not deserve to be elected as chairman of the council. A minister from Srinagar was quoted as having said that it would be an insult to the council if any undereducated member who has no knowledge of the rules and the constitution. However, sources disclosed that the minister supporting Inayat argues that the Ladakh region needs to be empowered. They said that the minister argues that the region needs participation in governance and by electing Inayat as chairman the people of the region would be empowered. However, other senior party leaders and ministers do not subscribe to the argument that Chairman Council is a constitutional post and it is in no way identified with the government or the governance. The ministers say that the credibility of the institution has to be upheld and a member who is educated enough to run the business of the house should be elected as chairman of the house. Sources said that it was for the first time that nobody among the treasury benches in the upper house is a law graduate. And as such the preference should be given to a person who can at least understand the law and the constitution. Meanwhile the 8 nominated Members of Legislative Council were today administered oath in Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council here. The oath was administered by the acting chairman Jahangir Mir to the MLCs namely Zaffar Manhas, Ashok Khajuria, Vikramditya Singh, Romesh Arora, Saifu-Din Bhat, Ajatshatru Singh, Mohammad Khurshid Alam and Surinder Ambardar. All the members were nominated by the Governor N N Vohra yesterday. |
