Return of migrant KPs, a political stunt or an honest move? | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, April 10: Lot of talk is going on for the past few days over the return of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the Kashmir valley, but as on date it seems to be more of a political stunt rather than being an honest move. Since 25 years have passed ever since the Kashmiri Pandits left the Kashmir valley there is a general perception among people that the Kashmiri Pandits would not come back. This is more so with the young Kashmiri Pandits who were born after 1990 when the militancy erupted in the Kashmir valley. "Young Kashmiri Pandits who have got their education in different parts of India have got settled in India and abroad. These people would not be enthused to come back since they do not consider Kashmir as their home land. Settlement of Kashmiri Pandits either in colonies or their native places is meaningless for the young Kashmiri Pandits," said a group of people. People in general believe that a section of Kashmiri Pandits who have been brought up in the Kashmir valley want to come back. These people miss their culture while putting up in the different parts of India. Despite a lapse of 25 years these people have not been able to mingle with the people where they are living these days. "Kashmiri society is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits and their absence has been felt badly over the past 25 years. The Kashmiri Pandits had many rituals while they were here but all that has gone with their exodus to the different parts of India. The younger ones are not aware about their culture and as such they cannot know about the importance of their rituals," said a group of people. There is a notion among the people that the Kashmiri Pandit families living in the countryside want to come back since their agriculture fields and orchards are located at their native places. On the other side the Kashmiri Pandit families who used to live in the urban areas are not much enthused to come back. "Agriculture fields and orchards are the real assets of people living in the rural areas. Same is the case with Kashmiri Pandit families who were living in the rural areas. They have suffered losses like anything after their migration to the different parts of India. The Kashmiri Pandits putting up in the city and urban areas don't have much at stake and as such they are not ready to come back," said the group of people. The return of migrant Kashmir Pandits has assumed centre stage over the past few days. While as Bharatiya Janta Party wants these people to get settled in satellite townships its alliance partner Peoples Democratic Party has opposed it saying that Kashmiri Pandits should settle at their native places. Separatists and National Conference have also chipped in and gave their own theory about this development. |
