Former vanguard of nationalism, BJP now plays soft-separatism
Dy CM seeks transfer of power projects to state

ET Report
Jammu, April 10: The J&K unit of the BJP, which assumed the role of the vanguard of nationalism, has now donned the role of soft-separatism. The party has changed its ideology to be seen as more sensitive to the 'nationalistic' or even 'sub-nationalism' aspirations and feeling of the people of the Kashmir.
The changed position was reflective on Friday by the deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh, who also holds the power department portfolio.
The Dy CM asked the centre to handover the NHPC projects to the State. The assertion and demand came after the union power ministry has categorically rejected this demand of the state in a reply to a question by the PDP MP Tariq Hamid Qara.
The demand for getting back the NHPC was first raised and pioneered by the PDP as part of its self-rule agenda. The NHPC was projected as an Indian institution which is robbing off the benefits due to the State, though devoid of any logic.
The NHPC-one of the finest corporations in the country- doesn't have any self-interest in executing and running the power projects. It has done so as it has expertise and the government then didn't have any funds.
"The political propaganda of the PDP was to attain self-rule and to make state financial independent it raised the bogey of getting back the power projects on the pretext that waters of the state are being used by institutions-corporations- which are outside the state," said a senior government official, wishing not to be named.
The BJP which had consistently opposed this time, sensing and understanding, its design has now after sharing power dropped its core ideology of the opposing sub-national feeling and narrative in the Kashmir.
"BJP- read the RSS- was the most feared political party in the Kashmir. The people feared that with its ultra-nationalistic overtures it could root out separatist tendencies in the valley and infuse a sense of fear. But now that fear has gone with BJP trying to appease the people in the Kashmir in a manner Congress did. Though, Congress did try to protect the interest of the Jammu, the BJP has surrendered even that too and reduced it to lesser player in the cabinet," said a senior BJP leader, wishing not to be named.
