JAMMU, Apr 16: Ruling out any hurdles in implementation of much talked Drug Policy, the state government today said that they are working on complete overhauling of the health system and termed the drug policy as a vital part of health renovation process.
Following speculations that a particular group of eople from Jammu and Kashmir Divisions comprising some doctors, drug distributors and medical representatives were jointly using their influence at political and bureaucratic level to hamper its implementation, Minister of state (MOS) for Health and Social Welfare, Asiya Naqash said the policy shall be implemented in letter and spirit.
"People do approach us in connection with implementation of Drug Policy with many issues which we understand and know how to deal with, but we are doing only what we have promised to people which includes complete implementation of the policy as part of our commitment to renovate the health system, we have decided to implement it in a phased manner to avoid problems, " she added.
Asiya said that she has ordered to stop issuing registrations to medical shops across the state which according to her deal with spurious drugs in far flung areas without any check and balance and made common masses suffer.
Meanwhile Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today said that drug mafia in Kashmir is sabotaging the implementation of state drug policy and added that it was sanctioned in January 2012 to keep quality and cheaper medicines available for patients in government hospitals and also check influx of spurious drugs. The DAK President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan said that there is a deep rooted nexus between drug mafia and some doctors who in connivance with some higher ups in the department are involved in spurious drug trade in the valley and these doctors are in league with shoddy pharma companies and are on their payrolls and alleged that Pharma companies provide these doctors everything from luxury cars, family trips to household items for prescribing their drugs. Nisar said that this doctor-drug mafia nexus is misleading public by disseminating false information regarding drug policy in general and generic drugs in particular and added that for opposing drug policy these doctors along with their higher ups receive huge sums of money from pharmaceutical companies and are hatching a conspiracy to bury drug policy which otherwise will bring relief to poor patients by accessibility and affordability of quality medicines. DAK said that Government should implement formulated state drug policy on fast track basis so that drugs which are the most important component of healthcare are available to each and every patient.
