BJP likely to go for Mufti's army twisting | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 16: The Prime minister has reportedly directed the home minister to take a tough call on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to sources a stern and final message is likely to be conveyed to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, once the PM returns from his foreign tour. "The PM is briefed about the developments. He will not speak directly about it but would ask Rajnath to send the message," said a senior BJP leader, wishing not to be named. PM Modi has made his image of being tough-guy and non-apologetic about his policies. But, policies of Mufti Sayeed make him do a lot of explaining. "The PM was forced to issue statements after CM Mufti Sayeed credited Pakistan and separatists for peaceful elections and also on the release of the Masart Alam. It was the first time he had to do it. And, he won't repeat it again," said the leader. The PM agreed to the alliance with the PDP fundamentally to bring about systematic changes in the Kashmir and for it agreed to give much political space to the PDP like giving full term chief ministerial tenure to it. "The purpose was to strengthen Indian sovereignty in Kashmir and not to allow pro-Pakistan or anti-Indian feeling to be nurtured or allowed. Mufti assumed he could get away like he had in the past with the Congress. But this time he had got it wrong and it could cost Mufti Sayeed dearly," said the leader. The BJP if it eventually gets off the coalition can further consolidate its position in Jammu and the polarization could help it. But, the same option and possibility will not be available with the PDP. "The NC was always more than willing to come on the board. And, this option is always available. NC especially the Farooq had strong opinions about the separatists. And if Mufti doesn't mend his ways, he will himself be blamed," said a senior official, privy to the deliberations of the government formation. |
