Early Times Report

Anantnag, Apr 16: Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed on Thursday said that government is committed to rehabilitate September 2014 flood victims.
Chief Minister who distributed cheques among over one thousand flood hit uninsured shopkeepers and small business holders of Anantnag and Kulgam districts, said, "We have started phased rehabilitation of flood sufferers. Those who suffered a loss of over 5 lacs in September floods were given Rs 1 lakh as compensation and those who suffered a loss of over Rs 10 lacs were given compensation of Rs 2.5lacs so that they can restart their business."
He said that a special attention will be given to rebuilding the damaged infrastructure. "We spent 5 carore in developing the Padshahi-Bagh in Bijbehara but the floods destroyed it so the government will give a special attention to rebuild the damaged infrastructure including roads, bridges, irrigational cannels etc," he said.
On opposition's allegations of pick and choose in rehabilitating the flood victims, Chief Minister said that the government will re-verify the list of flood sufferers and rehabilitate left out families in no time.
"we received same complaints from Srinagar, trade federation and other organizations met me and I assured them that the left out families if any will compensated in no time." He added.
In Anantnag, trade organizations accused government of rubbing their wounds with salt. "We have submitted a list of 5500 flood hit shopkeepers but today chief minister compensated only 1000 which is insult to a trader and is also an insult to us that among 1000 shopkeepers many received a cheque of Rs 5000." Reyaz Ahmad, trade association leader told Early Times.
Senior Cabinet Ministers including Finance Minister Haseeb Darbu, Flood and Irrigation Minister Sukhnandan Choudhary, Abdul Rehman Veeri Minister for Horticulture, Abdul Majeed Padder Mansiter of state for Education and Forest, MLA Kokernag Abdul Rahim, Raja Sabha Member Nazir Ahmad Laway, MLA Sofi Yousf and other leaders from PDP were accompanying the Chief Minister.
Surprisingly National Conference and Congress MLAs including MLA Pahalagm Altaf Ahmad Kaloo, MLA Homeshalibugh Abdul Majeed Padder, MLA Shangus Gulzar Ahmad Wani and MLA Devsar Mohd Amin Bhat too attended the function.
