Tawi bridge turns into a suicide point | Half a dozen incidents reported in 2 months | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 16: The famous Tawi bridge near Jewel here has turned into a suicide point with half a dozen incidents having been reported in the past two months. The data shows that at least two dozen people jump from the Tawi bridge into the river every year. While some of them get killed, others survive with multiple fractures. Despite this, police have ironically made no arrangement on the two tubes of the bridge to stop people from jumping into the Tawi river. The number of people jumping from the Tawi bridge to end their lives is increasing every year. Last year, at least a dozen persons, including two newly married woman, lost their lives after jumping from the bridge. All of them came walking on the bridge and then jumped into the river. It is so worrying to note that in less than four months of this year, the number of people attempting suicide by jumping from the Tawi bridge has reached six. The bridge falls under the jurisdiction of Nawabad and Gandhi Nagar (Ware House) police stations. After some one jumps into the river, the two take a lot of time to decide who is to rush there and under whose jurisdiction the incident had taken place. The police authorities had in the past decided that cops would remain deployed on the bridge to stop such incidents but nothing was done by them in this regard. Instead of delaying the issue, police must keep a round the clock watch on the bridge to save precious human lives, a police officer said.Police were investigating two dozen such cases. |
