Congress adopts BJP's pre-election agenda | Roles reversed in Jammu | | Early Times Report jammu, May 12: The virtual revolt in the Congress party in Jammu & Kashmir signifies two things. One, the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led faction has not taken kindly to the elevation of GM Mir to the position of JKPCC president, notwithstanding the fact that Azad would say again and again that he is against factionalism. Two, the Azad faction has turned Jammu-centric and adopted the BJP's pre-election agenda that led to the defeat of the NC and Congress and massive victory of the BJP in Jammu both in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The Congress had improved its position both in the Valley and Ladakh by winning four and three seats, respectively. In fact, the Congress surprised everyone by capturing three of the four Assembly seats from Ladakh. The Azad faction has, it seems, realized that if the Congress is to regain lost political space in Jammu province, which used to be its strong, stable and tested constituency, it has to adopt the BJP's pre-election planks. The BJP had raked several Jammu-specific issues and had won 25 seats from this region. That the Azad faction has decided to adopt the BJP's pre-election agenda became clear on Sunday when those who took part in the parallel meeting raked up several Jammu-specific issues, including their insistence on the establishment of the sanctioned AIIMS in Jammu instead of Kashmir. The other issues which the Azad faction took up included the issues concerning the refugees of 1947, 1965, 1971 and West Pakistan. These were the issues the BJP had raked up during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The Congress leaders lambasted the BJP and the Union Government for not conceding their demands and meeting their specific needs. But more than that, the Azad-led faction warned the government in the state and at the Centre to immediately pay attention and sort out the problems of the people. Besides, they appealed to all the Congressmen at the grass-root level to be ready for the "vigorous struggle" and termed as "confusing" the BJP-led NDA Government's policy towards the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus. They demanded resettlement of the Kashmiri Hindus in the Valley and asked the authorities to take steps "as per the wishes of the Kashmiri Pandit community". And on Monday, the Azad loyalists blocked the national highway for half an hour at Vijaypur to register their protest against the coalition Government in general and the BJP and the BJP national leadership in particular. The Congress leader who led the protestors also belonged to the Azad group. All this indicates the reversal of roles on the part of the main political parties - the BJP and the Congress. The BJP is in the government and, hence, it cannot organize activities which it used to till March 1, 2015. It is the BJP and the Panthers Party which will play the role the BJP used to. The Congress and the Panthers Party are on the offensive and the BJP on the defensive and that too for the first time since its inception in 1985. |
