| Drabu, Sethi take strong notice of 'digitization' without permission | | Work stopped forthwith, enquiry to be initiated soon | | Early Times Report jammu, May 12: In less than few hours of the news getting published in Early Times newspaper, both Cabinet Minister Dr Hasseb Drabu and MoS Culture Priya Sethi have taken strong notice of digitization of manuscripts in Sanskrit and Sharda, rare cultural assets of J&K without seeking permission from concerned quarters and not adhering to guidelines for the procedure. Following strict instructions from the ministers Digitization process which was set into motion has been stopped forthwith and a formal order is likely to be issued to enquire into facts which prompted authorities to take such steps that would have snatched the precious heritage from this state. Sources said the news published in ET created ripples in the entire department since early morning and sent into huddles those who at the helm besides people from Singapore from NGO who have been on the job keenly for apparent reasons. What came as a measure relief early this morning was strict instructions from the ministers that digitization work needed to be stopped immediately, sources said, adding that both the ministers have expressed surprise and anger at the development. Their anger is directed more towards the fact that procedural norms for seeking proper permission were not followed instead all this was done in a hush hush manner which make it explicit that parties had some vested interest in pursuing the project. Sources said following swift and serious cognizance from the concerned ministry those on digitization work for some days became conspicuous by their sudden absence. Sources further said that while higher authorities would be taken to task and questioned for this blunder, the role of some officials at the lower level like collectors has not been ruled out in what could have turned into a big cultural scam in the state. While no formal order was issued today, sources indicated that enquiry would be ordered to find out erring authorities and their motive behind initiating this move. This has become all the more necessary in the backdrop of the pressure from certain quarters who are viewing this as no less than criminal offence. A couple of social organizations have demanded strict action against the culprits which will prove as measures of deterrence to prevent such things in future, sources further added. |
