jammu, May 12: The Jammu University is going to conduct Entrance Test for various Post Graduate courses but the test is merely eyewash as it is not going to help the students who qualify it. The admission would be held on the basis merit.
The Entrance Test has become a wonderful excuse for varsity authorities to collect hefty sums from gullible students, and if accounted, nearly Rs. 70 Lakh would be collected by University authorities.
A JUET notification issued by Dean Academic Affairs, reads: "JUET shall be conducted only for screening the candidates for admission to various programmes. Successful candidates of JUET shall be admitted purely on the basis of academic merit in their qualifying examinations".
For appearing in JUET, the fee for General category students is Rs. 600 and for Scheduled category candidates is Rs. 500. Last year nearly 13,000 students had appeared in the examination and this year more are expected to appear in the test and the University will collect nearly Rs. 70.
If the JUET is merely a screening test and admission would be held purely on basis of academic merit, then what is the rationale of conducting such exam? Sahil Sharma an aspiring student questioned.
He further said, "Either Jammu University does not trust its own examination process or loots the students in the name of entrance test."
Castigating the authorities, another student, Ashok Jasrotia said that those studying in far flung colleges and from rural background generally, didn't secure good marks in graduation.
"The weight to JUET had opened doors for their admission in PG courses but it seemed that it is a deliberate attempt to debar rural and far flung area students and average students from getting enrolled in PG courses", he said.
Another student Rupali Kumari said, "Students from private colleges are getting huge marks in practical exams and even in internal assessment tests but not the government college students. This decision of University would only create hurdles in the way of average students".
"Majority of Universities are conducting the entrance examination and offering admissions merely on the basis of entrance test. After a long deliberations, JU had decided to conduct the entrance test but within few years' of its introduction, gradually the entrance test has become obsolete", she said, adding that inspite of moving forward, JU has been dragging its feet and has been evolving ways only to grab money from students.
Instead of rectifying the wrongs committed by his predecessor, the new Vice Chancellor Prof. RD Sharma has also been repeating the same mistakes and has been found interested in anti-student decisions, a faculty member pleading anonymity said.
He further said that some of the close ones of former VC were misguiding the new VC and those people have been pursuing their own agenda through Vice Chancellor.
Dean Students Welfare said that the decision was taken in the Academic Council and then in Syndicate, after which it was implemented. "As per UGC guidelines, it is compulsory to conduct entrance and it is only to check the eligibility", she said.
When asked if there is any doubt over the meritorious students got good marks from their colleges, she said that many a times meritorious students didn't make it to MBBS courses. When asked but MBBS entrance has full weightage, she said that it was merely an example and the decision was a policy matter.
