BJP MPs continue to embarrass PM, party
KPs, Pak issues

Early Times Report
jammu, May 12: All is not well in the BJP. There are BJP MPs who, it appears, are not happy with the political conduct of their own Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP high command. Till the other day, no one had expected that certain MPs would muster courage and take a stand different from what that of the Prime Minister and the party on important issues like the return of Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) to the Valley and Indo-Pak relations, but what transpired in the Lok Sabha last week and this week clearly suggested that things may become difficult for the Prime Minister and the party, which is under his complete control.
Last week, many BJP MPs aired views in the parliamentary party meeting and in the Lok Sabha, which must have disturbed PM Modi and those who have established their full control over the party by sidelining such senior leaders as LK advani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. In the Parliamentary party's meeting last Wednesday, it was BJP MP from Balia (UP) Bharat Singh who created an awkward situation for PM Modi. He questioned his claim that his government had achieved much by saying that nothing had changed and that no development took place in his constituency during the past 11 months. His anger was reportedly aimed towards the Union Ministers who are inaccessible for party MPs and they had to wait for months for a reply of their queries. Much to the chagrin of the Prime Minister and his men, many other MPs also supported Bharat Singh in the meeting by clapping when he ended his tirade. This was a sort of warning to the PM.
In the Lok Sabha, at least two BJP MPs embarrassed the Prime Miniter and others who matter in the party and the Government by denouncing Article 370 and demanding its withdrawal, saying the KPs won't return to the Valley unless Article 370 was abrogated. They termed Article 370 a hindrance. The BJP-led NDA Government had taken three U-turns in one month on the issue of return of KPs. In the first week of April, Rajnath Singh declared that the KPs will be resettled in the valley in a separate township. Three days later, the NDA Government changed its stand and said a composite township will be established in Kashmir for the rehabilitation of the KPs and just three days ago, the Home Ministry told the Lok Sabha that no colony would be created for the KPs - an announcement that was welcomed by separatists in Kashmir. They described the announcement as the victory of Kashmiri nation.
On Monday, another BJP MP and former Union Home secretary RK Singh criticized his own Government's policy towards Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. This MP from Bihar asked the Government not to hold an Indo-Pak cricket series. He questioned the need for having sporting ties with a country which shelters terrorists responsible for carrying out attacks in India. He said at a time when terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed was roaming freely in Pakistan and another terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi had been granted fresh bail, "what is point of playing cricket with them...I do not understand". The government should not hold such a cricket series or "reconsider" any decision on the matter as Home Minister Rajnath Singh had informed the House that Mumbai serial blasts mastermind Dawood Ibrahim had been given shelter in Pakistan, he said.
What these four BJP MPs did in the Parliament and the manner in which Bharat Singh was applauded by many of his colleagues just cannot be described as normal developments. These are indicative of the shape things could take place in the coming days. Earlier, Arun Shourie, who was a minister in the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government, had expressed the view that PM Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP national president Amit Shah had alienated his own group and the allies. However, signals emanating from New Delhi do not suggest any change in the attitude of PM Modi. In fact, PM Modi today said in the Parliamentary party meet that he alone could befriend Pakistan and his statement came just 24 hours after Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Bashit contradicted Rajnath Singh's statement that terrorist Dawood Abrahim was very much in Pakistan.
