Out of power Omar wants NC leaders to be humble, accessible | Look who is giving sermons on rights of people? | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, May 12: The former Chief Minister and working president of National Conference Omar Abdullah after losing power has started giving sermons about the rights of people and has announced that his party would fight for it. Irony is that when Omar held Chief Minister's office for six years he completely forgot about the rights of people and their liberties. Omar while addressing the NC workers here on Monday said: "You should leave no stone unturned to reach out to the people of your specific areas and should serve them with utmost dedication and honesty. Humility, humbleness and accessibility should be the hallmarks of your behavior." Critics believe that had Omar taught the lessons of humility and accessibility to his ministers and other office bearers when his party was in power, NC could have prevented other parties from making inroads into its bastions. "Omar is crying over spilt milk. His promise of setting up Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) remained confined to papers only. He remained mum over the issue when he was in power. Interestingly, Omar had mooted the idea of setting up TRC before becoming the Chief Minister of the state in 2008, " said a critic. He said that there are very few people who could get carried away by the Omar's rhetoric and would believe his claims about fighting for the rights of people. "Omar's track record on human rights front during his tenure was dismal. Kashmir witnessed killing of 120 youth in 2010. Despite the bloodshed Omar didn't give up the power and ensured that his chair remains intact," the critic added. "National Conference ministers had to pay a heavy price during 2014 Assembly polls for ignoring their party workers and not remaining accessible to the common people. NC could just manage to win 15 seats in 2014 assembly polls. Omar Abdullah and his team pushed the Kashmir's oldest party to the edge and it's at the verge of losing its address in Jammu and Kashmir," he claimed. Omar expressed surprise when he was told by the reporters that BJP claims that it has enrolled 50,000 members in the old city. "Credit for BJP making inroads in Srinagar's old city should go to Mufti Sahib as he is the one who joined hands with BJP," Omar told reporters. "Omar needs to be reminded that in 2008 NC had won all the eight Assembly constituencies in Srinagar but in 2014 Omar and other NC stalwarts, including his close aide Nasir Aslam Wani, and three other NC leaders lost from Srinagar. Has Omar tried to introspect why did people in Srinagar city vote against NC?" the critic asked. "It's strange that Omar is blaming Mufti for BJP making inroads in Srinagar. Had Omar and his party MLAs worked for the welfare of people of Srinagar NC would not have lost 5 seats in Srinagar in 2014 Assembly polls. Masses punished NC for its anti-people activities and Omar and his team should realize that they committed major blunders during their tenure." A politician while talking to Early Times said, "Since the day NC has been ousted from power all its leaders have gone into hibernation. Most NC workers have shifted their loyalties and the people who are still in the party are looking towards greener pastures. Even the people have lost faith in National Conference and don't take the party and sermons issued by the party leaders seriously anymore." He claimed that Omar lost the best opportunity to fight for the rights of people when he was in power. In fact people allege that he (Omar) "crushed" the rights of people when he was in power. |
