Early Times Report

Bandipora, May 30: The New Leaf Initiative (NLI) taken by District Administration Bandipora is getting lot of response not only at local level but even the reputed national level NGO's are putting their efforts to strengthen the education system especially in Government schools of Bandipora. As many as one dozen volunteers from across various states are busy these days assisting the district administration and Government schools in this North Kashmir district and for this initiative the district administartion is not at all spending a sigle penny as this kind of work has no budgtary allocation.
In order to ensure quality education and accountability of teachers in Government schools, the Bandipora district administration on the instructions of Educational Minister has launched a unique initiative under the name of "New Leaf Initiative "wherein the officers of district administration reach out to more than a dozen schools on daily basis.
The district administration lead by Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Dr Shah Faesal has formulated a team of around thirteen officers - "Educational Observers" and their job is to visit Government run schools particularly Primary and Middle schools located in the territorial jurisdiction of Bandipora district . Each group is lead by a team of two officers (educational observers) and they give the task to Government teachers to ensure that all the students learn basis subtraction , multiplication , division , names of ten fruits , vegetables , seasons etc. In additional to it observers impress upon the teachers that all the students should at least read their text books.
The teachers have to make sure that all the students from class 3rd to 8th learn these things within a time of one week . After one week the teachers are given another task. If the teachers fail to ensure that their students learn all these things , they are taken to ask which even can lead to their suspension.
Under the New Lead Initiative volunteers of various NGO's enhance the learning capabilities of children enrolled in Government schools across Bandipora district and the special focus is made on primary and middle school children. To make NLI more participatory and student friendly at least two volunteers have been assisgned the task of adopting one Government Middle or a Primary school in various villages of the district. In order to make best use of their experiences , the District Administration has looped in Teach for India (TFI) a Mumbai based NGO. TFI has send some of its volunteers to Bandipora for being part of New Leaf Initiative (NLI).
Pertinent to mention that getting associated with New Leaf Initiative (NLI) is a voluntary job for which neither the District Administration nor the State Government pays any remuneration
Right now as many as ten volunteers (fellows) from Teach for India NGO (TFI) are busy with teaching students at various Government primary and middle schools in Bandipora . Sunil Gill from Haryana , Veenu from Rajasthan , Surekha from Karnataka, Gursimran from Delhi , Nadiya from Punjab Delhi are some other volunteers associated with TFI who are camping in Bandipora from the last more than three weeks and are given task to teach at various Government middle / primary schools in the district. Pratham which is also a prominent NGO working in education sector across India , is currently busy in training Government school teachers in Gurez area which is considered to be one of the remotest areas of Jammu & Kashmir. NGO's like Sphere India and Gyan Setu have also been involved to work with Government school children of Bandipora.
