As Beig retires, tussle starts among officers to occupy DIG's chair in Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 30: With Shakil Ahmad Beig retiring today as DIG of Jammu range, tussle has started among police officers to get posted as DIG in Jammu. Beig, a 1998 batch IPS officer, was to retire on May 31 but he was given the farewell party in advance today because it is Sunday tomorrow. He was posted as DIG here about two years back. Though government is yet to find any replacement for him, SO to DIG has been given the charge of DIG, Jammu range, but overall operations would remain under the control of IGP, Jammu, according to police sources. Sources said a tussle had now started among at least half a dozen IPS officers, two of whom are from the valley, to get posted in Jammu as DIG. Some of them had started taking rounds of the ministers' offices and residences to seek their support. Some had even approached the chief minister's office, sources said. Sources said a decision to this effect was to be taken in the last cabinet meeting but it was postponed at the last moment due to unknown reasons. Police headquarters was also said to have initiated a move to post Viplav Kumar Choudhary as DIG, Jammu range but it could not mature. He is a 1997 batch IPS officer and all the officers of his batch were also due for their next promotion to the rank of IGPs. While the government was contemplating to effect a major reshuffle in the police administration after the forthcoming Amarnath yatra, sources said the possibility of filling up vacant posts was not ruled out in near future. |
