As WD hits region, mercury drops again in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 11: As fresh Western Disturbance (WD) hit the region, mercury dropped further in the Kashmir valley.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be isolated rain or thundershowers in the state during the next 48 hours.However, from Saturday there is possibility of scattered rain till Monday.Because of cloudy weather during the day and rain in the afternoon, the mercury witnessed drop in the valley.Mercury in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, dropped considerably after recording 6.2 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
The minimum was 4.6 degrees Celsius, more than three notches below normal at Gulmarg, he said.
Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, also recorded drop in the minimum after recording highest 24 mm rainfall 6.6 degrees temperature, more than one notch below normal.
Because of cloudy weather and rain in the afternoon the maximum temperature in Srinagar was dropped and settled at 22.8 degrees, which was five notches below normal yesterday.
The night temperature also witnessed about three degree drop after 5.6 mm rainfall, he said adding it was 11.8 degrees, more than two notches below normal in the city.
He said the sky would be partly cloudy with thundery development in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 27 degrees and 12 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours.Qazigund recorded 10.4 degrees, three notches below normal while at Kokernag it was 9, three degrees below normal.At Kupwara the minimum temperature was 9.
3 degrees, more than two degree below normal, he said.Leh recorded 9.
3 degrees minimum temperature while at border town of Kargil it was 8 degrees, he said adding sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 22 degrees and 10 degree respectively tomorrow at Leh.There would be no relief for people in Jammu though sky would be partly cloudy, he said adding the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 41 degrees and 24 degrees respectively during the next 24 hours.
