Filthy, un-chlorinated water being supplied to people | Kashmir on brink of outbreak of water borne diseases, courtesy PHE apathy | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 11: People living across Kashmir valley can easily fall prey to water bone diseases since the drinking water supplied by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department is filthy with no chlorination taking place. Sources told Early Times that PHE department has exhausted the stock of chemicals used for making the water fit for public consumption. There is no stock of chemicals at filtration plants in Kashmir and as such the health of the public at large is being jeopardized due to the 'follies' of PHE department. "Chemicals like ferric alum are out of stock at the filtration plants in Kashmir and as such no filtration of water takes place in the valley these days. Due to the absence of the chemicals the health of the people is being taken for granted and no serious efforts are being taken to correct this wrong," said the sources. Sources said the stock of chemicals got exhausted long back and since then no fresh orders for the supply of same have been issued by the PHE department. They said the higher ups of the department are playing with the lives of common masses by supplying filthy and non-chlorinated water through the filtration plants. "In the past the stock of chemicals got exhausted and it was expected that higher ups of PHE department would learn a lesson or two, but that was not to be. The disturbing situation has emerged this time again and there is total lack of accountability in the department. Supplying filthy and non-chlorinated water seems to be a no-serious issue for the department higher ups," said sources. Sources said that PHE Minister, Sukhnandan Kumar should order a probe in the matter so that responsibility is fixed on the officials responsible for keeping a watch on the demand and supply of the chemicals. They said that lack of accountability has made the matters worse in the department with the people being the ultimate sufferers. "Ideally the department should have adequate stock of the chemicals at the filtration plants. At the same fresh orders should be issued before the exhaustion of the stock so that there is no dearth of the chemicals. This would ensure that all important process of making the water clean and chlorinated does not go away. As such the people would continue to drink clean and chlorinated water with nobody taking their health for granted," said sources. Sources said that since Kashmir valley was lashed by incessant rains over the past few months the process of making the water fit for public consumption becomes all more important. They said that if water borne disease breaks out in any part of the Kashmir valley the consequences would be disastrous with the PHE department being responsible for it. Despite repeated attempts chief engineer PHE Kashmir, G M Bhat could not be contacted for the official version. |
