ANANTNAG, June 11: Even as Dr Mehboob Beg recently deserted the National Conference describing the party as anti-people and joined the PDP, leadership of the party today remembered his father late Mirza Afzal Beg on his 33rd death anniversary at his ancestral graveyard here.
Several NC leaders including former minister Syed Rashid, MLC Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri, MLA Homeshalibugh, Abdul Majeed Larmi, district president Anantnag Dr Mohammad Shafi, and others visited the grave of Afzal Beg and paid rich tributes to him. The leaders later visited the residence of Dr Ashraf Beg, cousin of Dr Mehboob Beg.
A separate remembrance meet was held at the residence of MLC Dr Veeri where glowing tributes were paid to Afzal Beg and other deceased leaders of the NC.
Another meeting was organized by Dr Mehboob Beg at his residence at Sarnal, Anantnag. Middle rung office bearers and leaders from PDP visited him and remembered the leader who was known as the brain behind Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
MLC Dr Veeri while talking to Early Times said that they will continue to remember Afzal Beg and will continue to organize such functions in his honor.
"Late Mirza Afzal Beg was a political leader of high stature; he has left tremendous political history, his political contributions can't be ignored," Veeri said, adding that the NC can't close the chapter because of the mistakes of his son.
"Beg shab was our party's stalwart who was the architect of the legendary 'land to the landless tiller' legislation which uplifted the masses of J&K" Veeri added.
He said that absence of prominent leaders of PDP in the remembrance meet organized by Dr Mehboob Beg has exposed the intentions of the party which he joined recently.
"Had PDP accepted Dr Mehboob Beg, prominent party leaders would have visited him today, but none among the senior leaders of PDP visited him which clearly establishes the fact that they don't have accepted him and neither they can understand the political stature of Afzal Beg," said Dr Veeri.
On November 17, 2014, before state assembly elections, Mehboob Beg quit the NC and extended support to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Dr Mehboob Beg after government formation joined PDP formally and currently is holding the post of spokesman.
