Latest from separatist camp: Pak making Geelani stronger, Mirwaiz weaker | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 11: Even as Pakistan has intensified its verbal campaign on Kashmir, there's also a marked shift in its policy towards separatist leaders who operate at its beck and call in the Valley. For now, Islamabad is making chairman of the hardline Hurriyat faction Syed Ali Shah Geelani stronger and his rival from the moderate Hurriyat faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq weaker. In past few weeks, a number of separatists have left the Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat and joined Geelani's Hurriyat. On Wednesday, the Mirwaiz faction suffered a major jolt when one of its executive members Agha Syed Hassan Budgami quit the amalgam. He claimed that a long-term strategy is missing in the conglomerate. In a letter to the Mirwaiz, Budgami informed him about the decision to quit the amalgam. He said the "need of the hour was to adopt a prolonged strategy so that Kashmir's resistance movement could be taken to its logical conclusion." Budgami said that "due to non-serious approach adopted by the Hurriyat (M) in the past, the opponents got a chance to point fingers and castigate the forum that claims to be the representative of peoples' aspirations." "Due to the mistakes committed by Hurriyat (M) itself, several leaders quit the amalgam," said Budgami, who heads Anjuman-e-Share- Shian. He said the Hurriyat (M) has not rectified the mistakes committed by it in the past and doesn't ensure an overhaul in its functioning. "Henceforth, my party will not take part in any of the conglomerate's function, meeting or an event," Budgami said. In the recent past Geelani and Mirwaiz have been at daggers drawn for headhunting. But the former is emerging stronger. Last month, Sheikh Yaqoob, another leader of Hurriyat (M), said the conglomerate "failed to represent the aspirations of oppressed Kashmiris." Before Yaqoob, as many as nine separatist organizations separated from the Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat to join Geelani's faction. They include J&K Peoples Movement(JKPM), J&K Freedom Front (JKFF), Tehreek-e-Mazahamat (TeM), J&K Islamic Political Party (IPP), Gujjar-Pahari Forum (GPF), Muslim Khawateen Markaz (MKM), and Pairvan-e-Villayat (PeV). The Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a conglomerate of separatist parties, was formed on March 9, 1993 as a "political front for right to self-determination of Kashmiris." Internal fissures within the conglomerate had culminated in a formal split on September 7, 2003, with 12 of its 26 constituents removing the then chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari and replacing him with Masarat Alam as its interim chief. Later, Geelani formed the Hurriyat Conference (G) and his own party, the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. In 2014, Shabir Shah and Nayeem Khan formed the Hurriyat J&K last year but later extended support to Geelani. Political analysts however said making Geelani stronger was not anything accidental but planned by Hurriyat's handlers based in Pakistan. "Few years ago, the then Pak President Pervez Musharraf sidelined Geelani and rebuked him for opposing his 4-Point Formula. But now the country has again gone for a change," said a Kashmir University teacher. "Pakistan doesn't want one group to be powerful, and to maintain its hold, it keeps changing powerhouse from one party to another." "Till now it was Pakistan's time to project Mirwaiz, now for the sake of change Geelani is being promoted. Otherwise why all of a sudden every separatist organization has started raising eyebrows on Mirwaiz?" he asked. Also, Pakistan has intensified its campaign on Kashmir. General Raheel Sharif, chief of the Pakistan Army, recently claimed that Kashmir is a disputed territory. "Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of Partition. Pakistan and Kashmir are inseparable. While we wish peace, stability in region, we want Kashmir's just resolution in the light of UN resolutions and as per aspirations of Kashmiris to bring lasting peace in region," said Sharif. Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman last month said, "Kashmir is an internationally recognized dispute, pending final settlement through a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices, as enshrined in numerous UN Resolutions." |
