Early Times Report

Jammu, June 11: Fifty percent posts of teaching staff at Government Degree College (GDC) Samba are still vacant, ten years after the college was established.
The college was set up in 2005 under the Prime Minister's Reconstruction Plan (PMRP) and various subjects including Arts, Science, Environmental Science and Commerce were introduced.
The state government has sanctioned 33 posts of teaching staff but at present the college has only 15 permanent teaching staff; rest of the posts are vacant.
The GDC is the only college of Samba district where thousands of students are enrolled every year, but still posts of teachers in Math, Education, Commerce, Political Science, History and Chemistry are vacant.
Due to shortage of permanent teaching staff, every year around 17 contractual staffers have been running the show.
Criticizing the government, Ragbir Singh, a resident of Samba, said the delay in filling up the teachers' posts has affected studies in the college. "On the one hand all teaching posts in city colleges have been filled and even some GDCs are overstaffed, but on the other hand the government has failed to post teachers in rural colleges," Singh said.
"The Higher Education department had engaged teachers on contractual basis but relieved them two months before the end of session. How can the students complete their syllabus," a student said.
He said the admission process for all under-graduate courses in all streams will start in a few days but it has increased the worries of college administration as they will face the daunting task of accommodating all students due to the lack of infrastructure.
When contacted GDC Principal Samba said that time and again he discussed the matter regarding posts vacant with the higher authorities.
"I hope that before the new session starts the government will fill all posts of teaching staff," he said.
