One veterinarian certifies 'good health' of all animals entering J&K at Lakhanpur | Govt jeopardizing public health | | Sanjay Pathak
Early Times Report
Kathua, June 11: Notwithstanding the nationwide scare of deadly epidemics transmitted from animals into humans , a single veterinary doctor certifies the fitness of all animals being brought into J&K-be it milch animals, poultry birds, sheep or goats-- at Rinderpest Control Check post at Lakhanpur, the gateway of the state. What is more interesting is that all the trucks, nearly thousands every month, carrying animals and poultry birds-which are imported into J&K-get fitness certificates of healthy animals 24x7 (round the clock) and, that too, without any difficulty. Sources said that the Animal Husbandry department has set up a Rinderpest Control Check Post which is entrusted with the task of checking the fitness of all animals and poultry birds being imported to Jammu and Kashmir and issue fitness certificates on a daily basis. It is mandatory for all truckers carrying animals and poultry birds to produce this fitness certificate before they pay their Toll at Lakhanpur. "The Center has been manned by a lone veterinary doctor who is authorised to check the fitness of animals and issue certificates to truckers for carrying healthy animals. It is near impossible to believe that how a single veterinary doctor could check the fitness of all animals and issue certificates," sources said. Sources said that some trucks, carrying poultry birds, sheep and goats, also enter J&K during night hours and they also manage to get fitness certificate of healthy animals without any inspection. "How could the lone veterinary doctor remain present on duty round the clock? The Animal Husbandry department has been playing with the health of the people by issuing fitness certificate without any inspection. It has been learnt that the lone veterinary doctor has kept in advance self-signed fitness certificates. He hands over these certificates to his staff who in turn issue certificate to truckers during night hours," sources said. While raising serious concern over the entire process, sources said the prevailing system has given birth of 'agent-culture' where fitness certificates are being issued to truckers only after charging a "fixed-amount". Dr. S.L Bhagat, Director Animal Husbandry department was not available for comments. |
