July 1 deadline ends, workers not settled as per agreement | Gun factory owners betray workers | | Arun Singh Early Times Report
Jammu, July 2: Betraying its workers, gun factory owners did not implement the agreement that was reached between them after one month long protests by the workers to concede their demands including implementation of minimum wages. Sources told Early Times that gun factory owners have failed to implement the agreement which was reached two weeks ago in which most of the demands of workers were conceded by the owners. "The agreement which was reached on June 13, 2015 between gun factory workers and their owners in presence of Assistant Labour Commissioner Jammu at Sub District Magistrate Office, Jammu, had not been implemented in letter and spirit by the majority of the gun factory owners," sources alleged. They informed that as per the agreement, it was to be implemented from July 1, but owners have failed to settle even single demand so far including implementation of minimum wage, settlement of leave salary pending for the last two years, providing tool to the workers. Sources alleged that the attitude of the gun factory owners towards workers by not settling their genuine demands is only due to lackluster approach of Labour Department which had been soft towards owners who did not respect the agreement and blatantly ignored the demands by playing delaying tactics. "The Labour Department which is the solely responsible to protect the rights of the workers has become mute spectator in this case due to unknown reasons and has left the workers to bear the atrocities of gun factory owners," they alleged. After agreement with gun factory owners, when workers reached their respective factories, they were told to finish the pending works and promised that all their demands will be fulfilled from July 1 but owners betrayed the workers by not conceding their even a single demand. However, it has been learnt that two odd factories have provided tools to their workers but majority of the owners who are 18 in numbers have overlooked their demands. Sources informed that after feeling cheated, a strong resentment is brewing among the workers and they are again mulling to go on protest if their demands were not conceded in toto as per agreement. "The workers will wait till July 4. If they do not get positive response from the owners, they will hold meeting on Monday to chalk out further strategy in support of their demands," sources informed. Assistant Labour Commissioner Jammu, R K Vaid, when contacted, said that he has not got any information that agreement is not being implemented by the owners. "As per my knowledge, all demands are being fulfilled by the owners," he added. |
