Fearing 'threat to life', Hurriyat (M) shelves anti-India rallies | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 2: Apparently fearing "threat to life" and waiting for more security from government, Hurriyat Conference (M) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has shelved its series of anti-India rallies. Started in May this year as part of the "Hafta-e-Shahadat", the program of Hurriyat was aimed at gaining public support by "carrying out anti-India rallies in every nook and corner" of Kashmir. Insiders said though the party had been holding many such rallies, a recent rise in militant activities in Kashmir, which claimed six lives in north Kashmir alone, has put the party on the back-foot as the new armed guerillas are even questioning the credentials of separatist leaders including pro-Pakistan hardliner Syed Ali Geelani. The Home Ministry recently disclosed that the militancy was fast going into the hands of new breed of militants, all youth, who have been indoctrinated towards radicalism. Such militants, as per officials, are not willing to take every dictation from their Pakistani-handlers particularly the United Jihad Council headed by Syed Salahuddin, but that they operate "in their own style". Amid this uncertainty, the Hurriyat (M) is playing safe. Sources said the party has shelved all rallies till the situation becomes conducive. However, weekly rallies held at Jamia Masjid Nowhatta will continue. Sources said the decision in this regard was taken on June 24 unanimously by the party's Executive Council and General Council members. The meeting held at the Mirwaiz Manzil Nigeen was presided over by the party chairman Mirwaiz. "The participants took detailed view of the ongoing local and regional political situation and party's outreach program," the insiders said. "It was observed that continuing with the anti-India rallies without more of security from the government could invite trouble for senior party leaders if they lead the protests. Thus the members resolved to be silent till situation improves," the insiders said. However an impression was given to the outside world that the campaign has slowed down due to the ongoing holy month of Ramazan. "It was decided that public contact campaign would be activated after the holy month," said a party handout released after the meeting. Pertinently, for quite some time the Hurriyat leaders are playing safe and demanding more security from the government. Just last week, Mirwaiz voluntarily stayed away from protests in south Kashmir against the killing of a civilian and two militants in an encounter there. Though allowed to move around by police, Mirwaiz preferred to spend the day addressing a religious function in Eidgah locality of Srinagar. The Hurriyat leadership including that from Geelani's faction is trying to get more of security cover from the government. The government on the other hand is almost willing to beef-up their security cover. As already reported by Early Times, the government has spent Rs 500 crore in the past five years on the security of separatists. |
