Will power-hungry BJP oblige questionable RSS? | July 13 the so-called martyrs' day | | Early Times Report jammu, July 2: In its latest issue, the RSS mouthpiece, Organizer, suggested that the government of Jammu & Kashmir must discard the practice of observing July 13 as martyrs' day and allow the state to function like other normal days. "Celebration of martyrs' day should cease now" said an article "Making of Martyrs", which was contributed by the J&K Study Centre, a part of the Sangh Parivar looked after by Arun Kumar, former Pranatiya Pracharak, Jammu & Kashmir. The State government had been observing July 13 every year as martyrs' day since 1953. This day Kashmiri leaders of all hues pay tributes to the killed rebels and denounce the Dogras of Jammu, saying their Army killed and butchered many "freedom fighters" in Kashmir on July 13, 1931. Significantly, the people of Jammu region and the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus have been criticizing the authorities for years now and urging them to withdraw the obnoxious order under which the government and semi-government establishments remain closed on July 13.July 13 is observed as a state holiday. Their argument is that those who got killed on July 13, 1931 in Srinagar were hooligans as that they had taken the law of the land into their own hands, attacked the symbols of the state, created a serious law and order situation in the Valley and unleashed a reign of terror on the minority community. The areas in which the members of the minority community and their houses, business establishments and religious places became the targets of the fanatics included Srinagar, Anantnag, Shopian and so on. Had not the State Government swung into action, the results would have been disastrous. Many Hindus were massacred that day by the Kashmiri barbarians. Now that the questionable RSS has suggested that the practice of observing July 13 as martyrs' day be scrapped, it is time to discuss if the power-hungry BJP oblige its mentor. Questionable because the RSS is a party to the agenda of alliance that maintains the politico-constitutional status quo. Ram Madhav, who was one of the chief architects of the agenda of alliance, is the RSS man planted in the BJP and nothing moves forward in the BJP without the prior concurrence of the RSS. The BJP draws inspiration from the RSS and both function in tandem. In any case, the RSS has expressed a particular point of view and it would be interesting to see if the power hungry endorsed the RSS' suggestion. The track record of the BJP in Jammu & Kashmir suggests that this so-called party with a difference would make common cause with the Kashmiri leaders of all hues. It will surely step into the "secular" Congress' shoes and not force its ally to announce that July 13 will not be observed as martyrs' day and that all the government and semi-government offices remain open that day. The fact of the matter is that both the RSS and the BJP are confused and ambivalent. They do not know what they do and say. That's the reason both the RSS and its political wing, the BJP, have over the period become objects of ridicule. |
