Srinagar, July 17: Nullifying the reports of any flood threats in the valley in view of the two-day rain forecast by the Met Department, government Friday asserted vigil is being kept at the water level and at present, there is no need to panic.
Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Mir Javed Jaffar said as per the forecast issued by the weather department, Kashmir valley would witness rains for two more days but the situation at present is normal.
Asked over the flood threats that are reported to loom large over this Himalayan region, Jaffar said the forthcoming situation would entirely depend upon the quantity of the precipitation.
He added that the water level is continuously being monitored and that there are no threats of floods at present."See, the situation requires vigil. We can say at present, there is no need to panic. It is the quality of rainfall on which it depends how much would be the level of the Jehlum the main river," Jaffar said.Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control further maintained there is a serious change in the weather which has occurred in Kashmir valley and it is being witnessed that one area of the region gets an abrupt rainfall- much in quantity while as there is a dry spell being witnessed in the other area.
"We have seen that there was 90 mm of rainfall recorded in South Kashmir's Kokernag area in one single day. Such a quantity of the rain is generally being recorded within the time span of two months. Also what is being observed at large is that there is a maximum area being covered by the abrupt rains all of a sudden," he said adding that during summers, the level at Jehlum is usually high.
The Chief Engineer said that the de-slitting of river Jehlum would be started soon as the nod has been given by the Government of India.
"The proposal was already sent and the nod has been received. The work will start soon," he said.
