| Non political function turns political | | 100th birth anniversary of GL Dogra | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 17: Officially it was a non-political function but politicians used the platform to chide each other during their speeches.
Function to celebrate 100th birthday of veteran Congress leader Girdhari Lal Dogra, who was father in law of Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely, was declared purely a non political function by the members of Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial Trust. But both Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad used this platform to score political points during their respective speeches.
Azad in his address made an indirect attack on BJP leaders who were present in the function by stating that Girdhari Lal Dogra throughout his life fought against communal and castist forces. Azad further said that Dogra had never compromised with communal and religious forces and was a 24 carat Congressman.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also availed this opportunity to make a veiled attack on Congress. While pointing towards Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely, who was sharing dais with other leaders, the Prime Minister mentioned that Girdhari Lal Dogra had chosen a very intelligent person like Arun Jaitely as his son in law.
"You know these days people are facing some problems due to their Damadas (son in laws)", the Prime Minister made a passing remarks without naming Robert Vadadra.
Rejecting the notion of political untouchability, the Prime Minister, asserted that India's heritage cannot be divided on ideological lines. He said all political leaders of the past deserve our respect, because they worked for the betterment of our nation.
Paying tribute to late Girdhari Lal Dogra, the Prime Minister said that he came into public life with an inspiration of patriotism. He said the very fact that Shri Dogra presented as many as 26 budgets, indicated his acceptability in politics; and expertise and dedication to the task at hand. He said GL Dogra also groomed many political leaders.
Referring to the exhibition on GL Dogra that he had inaugurated before the function, the Prime Minister said it was remarkable that his family was not visible in any of the photographs. He said this is a message for leaders in public life today. |
