Anantnag, July 17: Horticulture Minister, Abdul Rehman Veeri on Friday irked cloudburst sufferers in Aishmuqam area of this southern district and left them high and dry as the minister allegedly failed to announce relief for them as promised by the local party leaders.
On Thursday evening flash floods caused by cloud burst hit Nagbal-Hapathnard area of Aishmuqam and damaged many residential houses besides horticulture and agriculture crop particularly paddy.
Eyewitness said that the minister along with Peoples Democratic Party general secretary Rafi Ahmad Mir visited several areas of Cloudburst affected villages of Aishmuqam in Pahalgam, however according to locals Minister didn't stop his cavalcade in the affected villages barring Hapthnard.
The minister announced no relief. "We were told that Abdul Rehman Veeri during his visit will announce 'free ration' for affected families who lost paddy crop and whose houses sustained damage but he disappointed us by not making any announcement," Abdul Majeed, a Buseepora Hapathnard resident told Early Times over Phone. He said that cloud burst sufferers were assured help but during the visit minister didn't make any announcement. Reports said that Minister was also hackled by females in Nagabal Hapathnard area. "Why you visited our village if you can't help us," a female was reported to have said to the minister during the visit.
MLA Pahalgam, Altaf Ahmad Wani (Kaloo) who himself visited the affected families earlier in the day raised several questions over the minister's visit, "All we know that state is facing financial crises but the amount government spend for minister's visit to affected village was enough for providing help to us," he said.
"More than two dozen vehicles were in his (Minister's) cavalcade. Just to count how much fuel they utilized for nothing. Minister can't himself survey the damages done by the cloudburst so it was better for the government to save the amount which they spend on Minister's visit and disburse the same among the affected families," he added. Horticulture Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri was not available for a comment, however Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Bashir Ahmad Khan who was accompanying the minster in defense said, "For what you expect free ration to the sufferers, there is no such major damage. Few residential houses have suffered minor damages which will be compensated according to norms," DC told Early Times.
He confirmed that Minister didn't made any announcement regarding relief during the visit.
