PM Modi alienates Jammu

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 17: Discriminated against and humiliated people of Jammu region, including refugees and victims of cross-border terrorism, were anxiously looking forward to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu on the occasion of the birth centenary celebrations of Congress leader and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's father-in-law Girdhari Lal Dogra. He did come, make a brief speech at the Jammu University's Zorawar Singh Auditorium and went back to New Delhi leaving the people of the region high and dry.
The AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC), which had expressed the hope that PM Modi would visit Jammu on July 17 and announce an AIIMS for Jammu, got totally disappointed because the Prime Minister didn't announce an-all type medical institute the people of Jammu region needed the most. The ACC had on Wednesday said that the people of Jammu region gave mandate to Modi, and not to the BJP, and he would surely reciprocate the faith the people of the region reposed in him not once but twice in 2014 by announcing an AIIMS for Jammu. The ACC leadership is today chaffing and seething with anger. Of course, it is waiting for the D-day (July 20) to decide future course of action.
The victims of cross-border terrorism in Jammu region had expressed the hope that PM Modi would come to Jammu and do something concrete to heal their wounds and send a strong message to Pakistan that India would no more tolerate acts of terror being perpetrated on the innocent unarmed civilians living along the international border and Line of Control, but nothing of this sort happened. PM Modi not even once referred to the plight of the victims of terrorism. Nor did he hit out at Pakistan or reflect on the developments that took place on the international border and Line of Control after he signed a roundly condemned pact with Pakistan at the Russian city of Ufa on July 10 that said Pakistan will crush all kinds of terrorisms. The Pakistani butchers after July 10 breached the international border a number of times, bombard several villages in RS Pura, Akhnoor and Kanachak sectors as well as Poonch sector and killed and injured many civilians. They Pakistani butchers also injured a BSF jawan. The bombardment caused displaced of the hapless civilians. But PM Modi thought it prudent not to share the grief and agony of the suffering population in Jammu region. It's no wonder his Jammu visit left the victims crestfallen and totally disappointed.
Only on July 16, hundreds of refugees from PoJK held protest demonstration in Jammu to attract the attention of the Prime Minister. They held demonstration hoping that the agencies would brief the Prime Minister about the circumstances under which they protested. A couple of days before as well, they had held a massive protest demonstration in Jammu and the purpose was the same: PM Modi would come to Jammu and announce a package for them so that they got compensated for the properties they left behind in 1947-1948. PM Modi also left them totally disappointed.
Jammu had also witnessed during this week the organization of the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus, Panun Kashmir of Ajay Churungoo and Agnishekhar and organizations of refugees from West Pakistan disapproving the agenda of alliance. While the former questioned the RSS-BJP policy towards the state and Pakistan and urged the Government of India to redesign its foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan and policy against those involved in terrorist activities, brazenly indulging in communal and sectarian politics and carrying on separatist movement in the Valley, the latter denounced the agenda of alliance saying it didn't grant them citizenship rights in the state. The organizations of the oppressed, suppressed and persecuted Kashmiri Hindus and West Pakistan refugees had hoped that PM Modi's Jammu visit would bring about some change in the state, but with no result. PM Modi didn't say a word for the victims of terrorism and fanaticism.
The fact of the matter is that the visit of PM Modi to Jammu has disappointed all, barring the power-brokers in the BJP. In efect, he has further alienated the already rather alienated Jammu.
