No end to waving of Pakistani, ISIS flags | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, July 17: An Inspector of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained injuries as protests broke out in some of the areas of downtown Srinagar after the Friday prayers. At the same time Pakistani and ISIS flags were yet again waved during these protests. Eye-witnesses told Early Times that as soon as the Friday prayers culminated at the Jamia Masjid, a group of youth appeared in the chowk. This group of masked youth reached the slab of a building and waved the Pakistani flag there. The waving of the flag caught the attention of people who were coming out of the Jamia Masjid after offering the Friday prayers. As the youth were displaying the Pakistani flag they were joined by yet another group of youth who could be seen waving the ISIS flag. Waving of the Pakistani and ISIS flags was followed by the protest demonstrations that carried on for few hours in Nowhatta, Khawaja Bazar and Rangar Stop. After offering Friday prayers a group of people mostly comprising of youth carried out a procession. As soon as the procession reached the Khawaja Bazar area near the shrine of Naqashbandh Sahib there were clashes between the police and CRPF personnel posted in large numbers there. The protesters pelted stones on the security forces personnel and the ding dong battle carried on for some hours. The protests reached the nearby areas of Nowhatta and Rangar Stop. The youth pelted stones on security forces personnel at these places as well. During the protests some youth could be seen displaying the Pakistani and ISIS flags. Reports said that some of the police and CRPF personnel including an Inspector sustained injuries during the protests. Police lobbed dozens of smoke shells in order to disperse the protesters. The protests led to disruption of traffic movement in the Nowhatta and the adjacent areas. There was chaos in the area as the protests were going on in these areas. The protest demonstrations created problems for the thousands of people who had turned up to offer theFriday prayers as Jumat-ul-Vida (last Friday of Ramadan) was observed today. Estimates say that around one lakh people had turned up at Jamia Masjid to offer the Friday prayers. Kashmir’s chief cleric and chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addressed the people on the occasion of Jumat-ul-Vida. It would be in place to mention here that Mirwaiz had urged the youth not to carry out protest demonstration in the Nowhatta or the adjacent areas without any programme.
