At 45, Kashmiri power lifter wins Asian Gold | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Srinagar, Oct 11: Despite lack of sports facilities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, 45 year old Mushtaq Ahmed won a Gold Medal at Asian Power lifting Championship held at Sultan Kaboos Stadium Oman Muscat on 6th of October 2015, thus becoming the first weightlifter from state to win a Gold medal at International Level. A weight lifting coach with J&K State sports council, Mushtaq participated in several national level events and won medals for the state not only in weight lifting, but also in Athletics and body building. Mushtaq Zarger established modern gym at Barzula Srinagar and played pivotal role in engaging youths towards sports which not only kept the youths of state away from militancy, but also contributed in positive and constructive channelization of their talent and energies. Mushtaq attributed his success to his coach Mushtaq Ahmed (Sports Officer Kashmir) and Anees Ahmed Chowdhary who happened to be best power lifter of the state. After winning the Gold medal at Oman, Mushtaq on his return received a heroic welcome by his friends, family, J&K Power Lifting Association and J&K State Sports Council. Minister for Sports Imran Raza Ansari also greeted him. Mushtaq said that beside focusing on his training his aim is to witness a drug free society. |
