Gandhi Nagar Govt hospital slaughters norms; performs 66 percent cesareans | Doctors facing inquiries, FIRs for unprofessionalism | | Sumit Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 11: In a ruthless departure from the laid norms, doctors in the Gyanecology department of the Gandhi Nagar Govt hospital have conducted nearly 197 cesareans out of the 300 expecting mothers that walked in, against norms of just 18 in a single month, indicating a serious lack of professionalism on part of the government. Already under scanner for serious lapses, following which Health Department initiated two separate inquiries against the doctors, Govt Hospital Gandhi Nagar, is once again caught on wrong foot as this time the gynaecolgists had conducted 66% cesareans in a month . As per data available with the ET, the Gynaecology department of the Hospital, contrary to the Health department's norms of 18 cesareans only in a month, had done 197 cesareans. As per Health Department's guidelines, the doctors in Gynae should emphasize on normal deliveries and in no case the cesareans should exceeded twenty percent. If the officials sources are to be believed, the department is grappling with the shortage of A grade doctors. The post of A grade doctor is lying vacant after the transfer and posting of Dr Anil Mehta to Reasi. At present against sanctioned posts of four doctors ( including A grade) , the department has six doctors two are B grade while remaining four are diploma holders. Sources further said that the mess in the hospital had already been brought to the notice of the higher authorities by the hospital administration. When contacted, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Younis Khan admitted increasing graph of operations in Gynecology and said that the rate of cesarean cases was high. He also admitted that the previous team of doctors in Gynecology was better than the present one. Meanwhile, Director Health Services B.S Pathania when contacted for comment said that hospital receives referred cases, which are mostly in complication which has caused increase in cesareans .He, however, said that the matter is to be looked into. The Director also assured report of the two pending inquiries against doctors within days. Pertinently, the doctors in the hospital have already been entangled in departmental inquiries conducting by Deputy Director HQ, Anil Gupta, report of which is yet to come. On August 18, the Medical Superintendent (MS) Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar ordered suspension of Ashok Sharma senior pharmacist, Pharmacist Chand Ji Pandita and nursing orderly Rickson Gill following the protest demonstration by the relatives and family members of Anil Gupta, an autorickshaw driver of R.S Pura, who died allegedly due to the negligence of doctors. In this connection FIR was also lodged against two doctors namely Dr Geetu Dutta and Dr Rashmi Sharma with the Gandhi Nagar police station. The departmental inquires in this connection was conducted following the allegations that a Medical Representative (MR) was operating the Auto Rickshaw driver on behalf of doctors. In another case under inquiry, Gynecologists referred the patient to the SMGS hospital Jammu stating that she had been suffering from Anamia, however, the doctors observation was later proved false. The referred patient later delivered a baby in SMGS hospital. |
