Awed by Mufti's presence, BJP legislators disappoint as elected representatives | Most party legislators yet to learn nuances of parliamentary democracy | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Reoprt SRINAGAR, Oct 11: The week long autumn session of the State's Legislative Assembly that concluded on Saturday amply proved that barring few legislators most of the law makers of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are yet to have a feel of real democracy in the State. The brief autumn session that turned out to be 'stormy' gave a clear indication that BJP legislators have to learn a lot before they can claim to be real representatives of the people who voted for them. These legislators are yet to learn the nuances of the parliamentary democracy and as such people more so their electorate should not expect miracles from them in near future. BJP legislators like Ranbir Singh Pathania, Shakti Raj Parihar and Ravinder Raina were seen serious during the conduct of the autumn session with the rest of the party legislators seem to be 'enjoying' their outing on the Floor of the House. Even though the BJP is a partner of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the present coalition dispensation in the State its legislators could have still cornered the Government on certain issues. Virtually there was no talk about the cross border firing that has been taking place in the Jammu division over the past couple of months. The plight of the people living in these border areas has remained un-noticed ever since the firing started and same was the case with the BJP legislators during the autumn session of the Assembly. As soon as the Darbar would move to Jammu, the BJP legislators like the politicians of other political parties would start crying for the people affected by cross border firing. However, these people more so those belonging to BJP failed to project the miseries of affected people and such the affected people felt that they have been let down by their elected representatives. Over the past couple of weeks many dengue cases were reported from the Jammu division, but still then there was no or very less reference of these cases in the Assembly. The BJP legislators seemed to have been swayed away by the 'rosy' picture painted by the Health Minister Chaudhary Lal Singh. They could not pose questions to the Health Minister over this issue and as such the government escaped the criticism in this regard. During the brief session it also got noted that the BJP legislators were somewhat asked to behave 'properly' by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The Chief Minister could be seen issuing directions not only to the legislators of PDP, but even to the law makers of BJP. Mufti's personality somewhat awed the legislators of the coalition partners and nobody among them had the guts to take on the Chief Minister. Had the BJP legislators not objected to the beef ban issue and raised uproar over the hosting of beef party by MLA Langate Engineer Rashid then their position would have come under scanner. But on this issue too, the Chief Minister was able to score political points after he asked the BJP legislator and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh to seek apology for the physical assault carried out on MLA Langate by some law makers of BJP. |
