J&K becoming lung cancer capital of India: Report 10/11/2015 11:53:27 PM Early Times Report REASI, Oct 11: With 26.6 percent population in Jammu and Kashmir using tobacco products in one or other form, the state is becoming the lung cancer capital of the country. This was disclosed by Dr. N C Prabhakar, Resource person for the International Union against T. B. and Liaison Officer for Voluntary Health Association here at Reasi during an anti-tobacco awareness workshop in the town. In the workshop, Additional Commissioner, Sharma was the Chief Guest while CMO Dr. Parvinder presided over the function. Prabhakar said Jammu and Kashmir has the high incidence of smoking and is becoming the lung cancer capital of India due to increased smoking prevalence across all sections of the society. He said 26.6% population in Jammu & Kashmir uses tobacco products in one or the other form. 3.8% population in J&K smokes bidis while 8% use smokeless tobacco products. Cigarette use prevalence in J&K is 12 percent, almost double the nationwide prevalence of 5.7 percent. The highest proportion of adults (67.9 percent) exposed to tobacco smoke in offices is in J&K and the lowest (15.4 percent) in Chandigarh.
