Family members of deceased stage protest, allege inaction from 'Kathua police'

Udhampur, Oct 11: Alleging dowry death and laxity of the Kathua police in taking action against the in-laws of a local woman, who allegedly died under mysterious circumstances on Saturday, the family members of deceased along with local residents of Udhampur, blocked the National Highway here near Shiv Nagar for some time on Sunday demanding immediate arrest of accused.
The protesters placed the body of the deceased (Suman Kumari) on highway raised slogans against the Kathua Police and blocked the traffic on Jammu Srinagar highway for some time and later the protestors lifted dharna when local police official assured that action will be initiated in this regard.
Parents of deceased said that they had married her daughter with one Sunil Kumar of Ghagwari Kathua some three years ago. They alleged that the in-laws of her daughter used to pressurize her to bring dowry.
They further said that while making dowry demands, her husband physically assaulted her many a time and sent her back to their home, but every time after the intervention of some "respectable persons", they sent her back to her in-law's house with the hope that all the things will be settled timely .
They alleged that few days back Sunil Kumar asked Suman to bring some money for him and when she expressed her inability to do so, he thrashed her and sent her to their home. However, after a couple of days, again took her along with him, they added.
Parents said that on Satuday evening, they received information that their daughter was lying unconscious at her in-law’s house. Subsequently, they along with other family members rushed to her in law's house where they found the deceased having injury mark on her body.
Following which they had lodged a complaint against Sunil and his family members but Kathua police initially refused to register case against accused but later registered case but have failed to secure any arrest till date.
