Dr Sanjeev Gupta performs rare knee replacement surgery at GMCH Jammu | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 17: Team of orthopedic surgeons led by Dr Sanjeev Gupta, Associate Professor and Head of Unit performed a rare knee replacement surgery and saved leg of a 48 year old BSF Jawan who was suffering from osteosarcoma,, a cancer of the femur bone by performing a very rare kind of Total Knee Replacement at Department of Orthopedics, GMCH Jammu. According to spokesperson of Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu this is the first of its kind to be performed in the state. "The Conventional treatment for the same is amputation of the concerned limb but the experts put in their scientific knowledge and performed the limb saving surgery which has ushered a new era of orthopedic surgery in the state," he added. Spokesperson added that team removed lower 4 inches of the femur bone which was engulfed by the tumor. "The bone gap was replaced by a custom made Total Knee Replacement implant tailored to the fit of the femur bone and knee joint of the patient. According to Dr Anil Gupta, Professor and Head of the Department of orthopedics GMC&H Jammu although joint replacement surgery which includes Hip replacement and knee replacement is routinely being done at GMC &H Jammu this kind of surgery is very rarely done, he added. These innovative and modern techniques have marked a new horizon for the treatment of patients in the region. |
