Traffic resumes on Kashmir highway after nearly 40 hours
10/20/2015 11:49:54 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 20: Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was resumed today after remaining suspended for security reasons from October 18 afternoon. Traffic was suspended after clashes erupted at several places on the highway in south Kashmir following death of Zahid Bhat, a trucker who received burn injuries during a petrol bomb attack by protesters over beef rumours at Udhampur in Jammu region on October 9.
Zahid who was admitted in Safdarjung hospital at New Delhi succumbed yesterday, evoking spontaneous protests at Batengoo and other places on the highway.
Separatist organisations besides traders and transporters had called for a general strike against the death of Zahid, who was laid to rest at Batengoo, which was followed by clashes between "pro-freedom" demonstrators and security forces at several places in south Kashmir. A traffic police official said the traffic was resumed and vehicles from Srinagar and Jammu were allowed to move.
