Blackening of Rashid's face | Had he been booked for hosting beef party, there could have been no Delhi incident | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 20: On Saturday, Abdul Rashid's face was blackened at Press Club of India, Raisina Road, New Delhi. Those who threw ink at his face said they took this step to send a message across the country that those who would slaughter cows or eat beef or hold beef parties to hurt the Hindu sentiments would be treated like they treated Rashid. "We avenged the insult of our religion," they said, adding that they will not allow cow killing and beef eating in India, as they worship cow as their mother. Rashid, an independent from Kashmir, had on October 7 violated the beef ban law in J&K and hosted a beef party at the Srinagar MLAs Hostel. During the provocative beef party, he had challenged the legislature, the justice system and all the institutions and shamelessly declared that no one could bar him and the members of his community from eating beef. "We will eat what we want to eat. We are a majority community. Our religion permits us to eat beef, and hence, we will violate the laws and eat beef," he had said. His unpardonable act was supported by all in Kashmir, including the NC lawmakers. On October 8, a scuffle took place between him and a couple of BJP MLAs within the House. All the Kashmiri MLAs sided with Rashid. NC working president and Leader of Opposition also spoke the language of Rashid. He declared in and outside the House that J&K was a Muslim-majority State and if the Hindu-majority States could ban meat on certain days, why did the majority take exception if Muslims in the Muslim-majority State eat beef. All the Kashmiri lawmakers demanded action against the BJP MLAs, who allegedly attacked Rashid on the ground that he had hurt their religious sentiments by hosting the beef party in the MLA Hostel. While not a single Kashmiri leader had assailed Rashid for hosting beef party in violation of law, almost everyone of them criticised those who blackened his face. They should have spoken against him also for his October 7 condemnable act. Ironically, police, which were duty bound to book Rashid for his unlawful activity, also did nothing despite the fact that his action had outraged the entire Hindu community across the nation and demanded action against him as per the existing laws. According to Sections 298 A, B, C and D, those found guilty of cow slaughter, sale of beef and consumption of beef in the State could be awarded 10 year imprisonment. When Rashid committed the offence these sections were very much in vogue in the State and it was the duty of police to take action against Rashid. Had J&K police acted against Rashid on time, there would have probably been no ink attack on him. It was the total failure of J&K police to act against Rashid. It would be only desirable if the State Government enforces all the existing laws so that the rule of law is established and no one dares in the future to commit the offence Rashid had committed on October 7. |
