| Panic gripped GMCH after power failure left patients gasping for life | | | Nitesh Sangral

Jammu, Oct 20: The critical patient care system came to stand still today at premier health institute of the region-Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu due to power failure, courtesy mismanagement at the part of the administration of the hospital.
According to hospital sources the patients and attendants along with doctors on duty were forced to spend hours without light as two supply lines got destroyed due to short circuit and power backup completely got shattered at GMCH Jammu on Tuesday.
Ironically the costly generators too failed to come to the rescue of the situation in the critical hours as the 'white elephants ' installed there reported to be non-functional due to the want of the fuel which was reportedly out of stock.
Sources at GMC hospital Jammu informed Early Times that power failure at GMCH Jammu created panic in the some parts of premier health institute viz. ICU, Emergency, Control Room, Hospital Quarters, Drug Store etc.
"At around 5 PM, today evening two supply wires of electricity in the hospital got destroyed due to short circuit and the majority of healthcare units including emergency got affected due to this power failure while patients and their attendants and doctors were seen running in panic and the manpower from Hospital Electricity Maintenance were seen struggling to rectify the technical snag which took nearly 3 hours time.
The horrifying situation almost turned fatal for 12 critical patients in the ICU , out of which 9 were put on ventilators and had to be manually pumped in air for their resuscitating procedure, the sources added saying , had this snag prolonged for some more time, it would have left the disastrous consequences.
It was due to the intervention of administration that the power was restored in the hospital, sources said.
Sources further said that keeping in view the power crisis and frequent power curtailments in the Jammu region, the hospital management has purchased heavy duty generators sets for the smooth flow of power in the vital units of the hospital in case of any emergencies and has spent crores of rupees over the generators but sadly enough they too failed to maintain the power supply in today's emergency as generator sets were found short of fuel that exposed the negligence of the system in place in the hospital.
"The gen-sets remained dysfunctional as the fuel stock reportedly had got dried some three months back despite ample sanctioning of funds and patients were left in lurch here today, sources alleged while raising question, despite having a special power supply line for the hospital , how the fuel stock went dry within three months? |
