Good governance? 10k illegal structures stand untouched across J&K | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 20: The tall claims of PDP-BJP coalition Government to pull down 10,000 illegal structures in Jammu and Kashmir and punish officials for allowing such constructions have fallen flat as no action has been taken against anybody by this Government so far. On March 13, Early Times exclusively reported that there at least 10,000 illegal structures were raised by influential people over the years in the State. The Minister of State (MoS) for Housing and Urban Development, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, while admitting that illegal structures have come up in violation of the Master Plans in Srinagar, Jammu and Kathua districts had promised to pull down all such structures and impose penalty on officials during whose tenure such structures were erected. Mir had also announced that his Government is coming up with a policy to deal with all illegal constructions across the State which have been raised by the blue-eyed people in nexus with corrupt officials in previous National Conference and Congress Government. He said all such officials, whether retired or in service, who allowed such illegal constructions would be punished. But eight months since the Minister's announcements, the illegal structures stand erected across the State. Sources informed Early Times that following court orders about demolition of illegal structures, the Government has framed a policy as per which only those structures that have come up before March 5, 2014 were scheduled to be considered for one time settlement. And the structures that have come up after March 5, 2014 were to be regularized but with new rules and regulations. However, due to some political influence the policy was kept under carpet, said sources. Notably, in March 2015, the State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) booked a bureaucrat-turned-politician and former Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner, Farooq Renzu, for allowing illegal construction of shopping malls in the city. An FIR (11/2015) was registered against Renzu under the Prevention of Corruption Act for brazen misuse of official position. According to sources, in another FIR (12/2015) yet another former SMC Commissioner was booked for granting permission to a shopping mall. Meanwhile, the MoS for Housing and Urban Development did not return repeated calls from Early Times for his comment. |
